SDA Pensions

For those who are now, or have been employed by the SDA church (Don is the only one that I am aware of) I ask a question:

My sister's late husband was more than a 30-yr. employee of the SDA university systems. When he died she began receiving his pension.

If she remarries, will she lose all her pension? If so, doesn't it seem to suggest that living together is the superior financial choice? What can you explain about this, or am I in error?

She has a gentleman friend, which her children are very happy about, but they are very concerned that remarriage might eliminate her pension which is necessary for living expenses.

Can you explain the policy of the church?

Re: SDA Pensions

Elaine,

I don't know the answer, but I will look into it. Each "Union" Conference should have a Pension specialist who can answer such questions.

(Further information after initial posting...)

The Canadian Adventist Pension plan is available online:
http://www.sdacc.org/common/deptforms.php?id=20

There is no mention of discontinuation of pension if the spouse remarries. A "vested" (two or more years of membership in the plan) pension is available as a "lump sum" or as a "life time" payment. Note especially pages 10 and 13.

Note on page 10, pensions are considered a family asset and must be taken into account if there is a divorce.

Keep in mind that this is the Canadian plan and must adhere to Canadian law. The plans in the USA may be different.

Re: SDA Pensions

Thanks, Don.

As you wrote, there is no mention of pension benefits extending to the widow of a pensioner if there is remarriage.

Maybe this doesn't happen in Canada ;-)

If you died, and your widow remarried, is there an assurance she will continue to receive your pension, or part of it?

Re: SDA Pensions

I have worked for the SDA Church for approximately 20 years when they changed over to the new Pension plan and was told at the time that when I retire I would be able to draw from both plans.  However, I have not been able to find out any information regarding what I would be able to draw on the original pension plan that had 20 years service on it.  The current plan only has two years service and I have since left employment with the SDA church.  I had worked 9 years with Loma Linda University Medical Center and then 14 Years with Walla Walla College which is now Walla Walla University.  How do I find out what I will get from this original pension when I retire in 9 years?
