Mayor Barry charged with stalking

Jul 5, 7:09 AM (ET)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Police say former Washington Mayor Marion Barry has been arrested and charged with stalking a woman.

The United States Park Police said Barry, a current D.C. Council member, was arrested Saturday in Washington after a woman flagged down an officer and complained that Barry was stalking her.

Barry was charged with misdemeanor stalking and released.

A message left seeking comment from a spokeswoman for Barry wasn't immediately returned early Sunday.

Barry served four terms as mayor. In his third, he was videotaped in 1990 in a hotel room smoking crack cocaine in an FBI sting. He served six months in prison and in 1994 regained the mayor's office.<!-/quote-!>

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090705/D9988JVG0 .html

Where is the citizenry of D.C. in keeping this guy voted into office? He was goofing around when we lived back in the Washington area in 1990. Should he be excused because of his involvement in the Civil Rights movement or held to proper standards?

Read this review of the Book "The Nine Lives of Marion Barry":

<!-quote-!>quote:
Many people remember Marion Barry as the philandering drug-addled mayor, the one who famously uttered the phrase “bitch set me up” as he was arrested during an FBI sting in 1990. He’s the poster boy for corruption, a pariah who will never be forgiven for bringing international shame on the nation’s capital.

Yet to others, Marion Barry is a folk hero. Hailed as a civil rights champion and defender of the poor, he’s the man who transformed Washington D.C. from a sleepy southern town run by segregationists into a cosmopolitan, political stronghold of Black America. Charismatic and defiant, Marion Barry’s soaring achievements, catastrophic failures and phoenix-like rebirths have made him a symbol of mythic indestructibility. No matter how many times Marion Barry gets knocked down, (or knocks himself down) he always seems to get back up.

Born a sharecropper’s son in segregated Mississippi, by the age of 23 Barry had nearly finished his Ph.D. in chemistry when he joined the civil rights movement. Surviving beatings and brutality as an activist and a shotgun blast to the chest by Black Muslims as a young politician, Barry went on to become the pride of his generation as America’s first black activist mayor. After three terms as a hugely popular leader, Barry committed what many saw as the most painful political suicide of all time when he was filmed smoking crack in a hotel room with an ex-girlfriend. Yet soon after his release from jail, in one of the most amazing political comebacks in history, Barry was re-elected mayor of Washington D.C. with an astounding 56% of the vote.

From the Mississippi cotton fields to the corridors of power, Barry has weathered drug and alcohol addiction, cancer, 4 marriages, jail time and political extinction to dominate Washington D.C. city politics for more than 40 years. Now, at the age of 73, to the disgust of some and delight of others, Barry is once again in the political limelight.

With unprecedented access, The Nine Lives of Marion Barry tells the continuing saga of this despised, beloved and resilient politician. Its the potent story of race, power, sex and drugs; the tale of a complex and contradictory man who is the star of one of the most fascinating and bizarre chapters of American politics. Who is Marion Barry? Cherished hero? Abysmal disgrace? Was he the victim of persecution or did he set himself up? How is he viewed by his enemies, his followers -- by Black and White America? For the first time, The Nine Lives of Marion Barry reveals the complete unforgettable story.
<!-/quote-!>

http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Nine-Lives-of-Ma rion-Barry/85649738180?v=info&viewas=0
