The latest Newsweek (www.newsweek.com/metabooks
lists the best 100 books.

Check it out and give us your list of all-time
favorite books worth a re-read.

Several of mine, in no particular order:

Orwell's 1984, God: A Biography (No. 10 on Newsweek's list)
Karen Armstrong's A History of God

There are many more. Given time we all can begin to form a list of those that have greatly influenced us.

Re: Favorite Books

Elaine: Just read 1984 a few months ago and was blown away.

One of my favorite books of all time would have to be Watership Down. If you've read it then you should know why it's a favorite. I actually had a friend in high school who made fun of the book when I told him about it, but he read it and agreed with me after he finished. It's a remarkable book.

Re: Favorite Books

No, I haven't read it, but because it is a classic, I feel I should read it. Thanks for the recommendation.

My English teacher son, is constantly reminding me of new books and we often exchange them.

It is sad that too many TSDAs were discouraged from reading fiction by EGW when in truth, they reveal human nature in a way that is impossible in informative and explanatory books on theology or faith.

I haven't read Orwell's "The Animal Farm" which is always appropriate.

Re: Favorite Books

Elaine

I perused the list at the link from Newsweek. The sad part about it is that up to the time I left the church the only book on that list of 100 I had read was the Bible.

Since then I have read 9 more and am reading 1 at present.

Here is what I have read:

At University:
Democracy in America
Illiad and the Odyssey
The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money

Self-selected:
Pride & Prejudice
On the Origin of Species
The Histories
For Whom the Bell Tolls
The Sun Also Rises
His Dark Materials (trilogy

Currently reading:
Das Kapital

(How is Das Kapital by Marx on the list but The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith NOT???

As for reading again? From that list I would read Democracy In America by De Tocqueville, On The Origin of Species by Darwin, The Histories by Herodotus.

Others I have read worth reading again (although I am still reading old classics due to my deprived SDA education}:
The Fountainhead- Ayn Rand
Atlas Shrugged- Ayn Rand
Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card
Shadow series- Orson Scott Card
Essays: Moral, Political, and Literary- David Hume
Non Zero- Robert Wright
Extraordinary Popular Delusions & the Madness of Crowds- Mackay
Dune (series)- Frank Herbert

I will think of more but that is a few "off the top of my head".

Re: Favorite Books

Neal, an exciting list. There are several I have begun (Ayn Rand's are sooooo long) and now have three of Malcom Gladwell's on tap: Blink is half read; the other two are waiting.

Still absorbed in Robert Wright's "The Evolution of God" so Non Zero would be one worth a read.

This am I finally ordered Albert Schweitzer's "In Search of the Historical Jesus" which is a classic I should definitely read.

Others out there, contribute your lists.

Re: Favorite Books

I'm reading New York Times Bestselling Author Mark Levin's new book "Liberty and Tyranny". Here is a quote about a past time not unlike our current situation :

<!-quote-!>quote:
... in the 1930s during he Great Depression, the Statists [Liberals] successfully launched a counterrevolution that radically and fundamentally altered the nature of American society. President Franklin Roosevelt and an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress, through an array of federal projects, entitlements, taxes, and regulation known as the New Deal, breached the Constitution's firewalls. At first the Supreme Court fought back, striking down New Deal programs as exceeding the limits of federal constitutional authority, violating state sovereignty, and trampling on private property rights...<!-/quote-!>

(Message edited by Bob_2 on July 09, 2009)
