Re: Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

Working at McKees more than paid for my three years of SMC education, being as I had free room and board at my family's Collegedale home. But I had a hard time convincing the bakery that I, and not the college, should receive my paycheck as the usual arrangement was to send student worker's wages directly to Southern. Being as I worked the PM shift, I worked Sunday through Thursday. I worked my way up through the ranks, such as they were, to operate the machine that put the cupcake batter into pans before they went through the oven. In the summer it was pretty miserable, with the air thick with grease (sprayed on the pans before the batter went in) and sugar, and and the temperature around 100 degrees. And so much noise you had to shout to be heard.

But I also appreciated the McKee Library, which I think opened towards the end of my time at Southern. I discovered all sorts of things there. And began to gradually realize that I wasn't an Adventist anymore.

Re: Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

I have been unable to get on atomorrow for some time. I have worked with Ryan and it still does not work. May be a problem with my computer. If you can read this, it is because I am using my wife's Apple to see if a different computer will do what my old PC refuses to do.

(Hate Apple's modern slim line mouse!)

Derailing the thread for a minute:

Hub,

I don't think it was a problem with your computer. I think it was simply a case of you trying to log in before your account was activated.

E-mail me if you have any more problems, but it seems like it's fine now.

Ryan

Ryan, thank you. You have gone above and beyond the call of duty. In my experience (and that is where I have you beat!} I find that if a computer doesn't work, it may be cheaper to buy a new one than to spend a week trying to fix it.

I have a jump drive that works, and I will use it to move things to my wife's computer when I have a need to write to Atomorrow.

(Hate this Apple mouse. When you touch it the screen jumps all over the place!)

Don Sands,

I have always thought of you as a decent human being; however, having learned that you got through college by taking advantage of "Lil Debbie," frankly, that concerns me.

(Message edited by Hansen on December 24, 2009)

Glenn, you'll need to be understanding and forgiving. The power of influence can be overwhelming. There are not many SDA's that have not partaken of "Lil Debbie", and myriads still do. Many have come to regret it and repented. Others are still under her illusive power. It is a powerful and sensuous entrapment.

especially the chocolate covered peanut butter wafers....which at times has seduced me to overlook the good Sister's "Counsels on diet".

Crunching them up and sprinkling on any Ben and Jerry's, however, constitutes a fabulous 7 layer food pyramid.....theres the dairy, nuts, strawberries & cherries are either fruits or veggies, right? finally, one does need a certain amount of carbs, and chocolate is a health food, right?

If our collective addiction to Lil Debbie is the only reason to keep Santa away from any of our chimneys, most of us will make it thru the holidaze...

(except maybe Tiger Woods!!! ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, so far!!)

so, Merry Christmas to all....and I hope your next year is even better than the last...

mine will be, if Santy comes thru with my wish list!!!

Some of us actually vowed to leave the stuff alone after we had seen the process involved.

Many of my associates there were not Adventists. I lived quite a sheltered early life and working at McKee Baking Company was the first time I worked side-by-side with "secular" workers.

If the company was not owned by an Adventist, would there be a problem?

Brinsmead noted sometime back that Adventists take themselves way too seriously. This concern over the successful Lil Debbie illustrates that perhaps.
.

Re: Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

Many years ago there was a term used because it seemed appropriate for the hierarchy of the church:

The "General Conference Front" was usually seen as what might have been called a "beer belly" but supposedly was developed by supporting Lil Debbies?

Re: Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

Don, working at McKees was also my first ongoing exposure to non-SDAs. I was a bit confused by the fact that they were not actively evil! And further confused to find that some of the Adventists working there, especially several in positions of power, did seem to be genuinely evil. So perhaps Little Debbies are to blame for my questioning, and eventually rejecting "the TRUTH?"

Re: Collegedale Approves Beer by the Drink

Hmmmmmmmm.

I came to Southern, already quite experienced in the "evil" of those in denominational "power". My mother had successfully held her own against such. Then, things got confusing in a new and interesting way. The personnel director of McKee's was an old "flame" of mom's. I wonder if that is how I got the job on the janitor detail.

Whatever, I am grateful for the financial opportunity provided when I needed it. And, for the insight I gained into industrial America.

Some memories:

A man who worked on maintenance or electrical who used to be a minister until he had a nervous breakdown.
Many single mothers working there to make ends meet.
Women who worked the line; how they were able to chatter and work really fast at the same time.
How a wealthy owner affects the lives of his employees right down to closing early on Friday.
A Baptist minister who worked at the security post.

.
