Health Reform?

Someone angrily wrote and said:  The SDAs are still promoting health reform.  In fact the thrust of their health message these days is to remove vegetarian meat substitutes etc. from the diet and eat only wholesome, fresh foods. I know because I attended one of their week long seminars which included cooking classes where we were taught how to cook great meals without milk, cheese and eggs.  SPEAK THE WHOLE TRUTH, please.

Tom Norris said: All SDA’s need to understand that the Advent Movement is in a serious crisis that cannot be dismissed away or ignored.  They need to face the issues with a humble and teachable spirit instead of pretending that they have no errors to correct.

First, I have always made it clear that the 19th century SDA’s promoted a very successful and excellent Health Reform Message.  In fact, they are responsible for the Cereal Isle that can be found in every Super Market, along with numerous Vegetarian Meat products that were also developed in Battle Creek by Kellogg.

So the SDA’s should be thanked and praised for their many accomplishments in this area of food and nutrition, which is so fundamental to historic and genuine Health Reform.

But when you say:  “The SDA’s are still promoting Health Reform,” the question remains; what kind of Health Reform and how successful has it been?

I can assure you that none of the Pioneers would approve of the present condition of the Adventist people or of their present version of Health Reform.  It is an embarrassing and unnecessary situation for which all SDA’s should hang their heads in shame.

How ironic that the once successful SDA brands such as Loma Linda, Morningstar, and Worthington, are now owned by the Kellogg Company. Not by the SDA’s.   The Adventists have failed in a major way with their Health Message.  Which also explains why the church did not develop a vegetarian restaurant chain, and why they no longer have any worthwhile Health Publishing.  This is very sad.

The fact of the matter is this; The SDA’s no longer understand their own Health Message.  This is because their leaders have not been honest about Kellogg or about the Health Message any more than the history of 1888.  Consequently, they have long ago forgotten the principles that both James White and his protégé John Kellogg used to develop the Battle Creek San into the crown jewel of the SDA Health Empire.

This failure explains why the publishing of Health magazines and books by the SDA’s is only a fraction of what it was back in Battle Creek.   Back then, they had the leading public Health Magazine in the County and Kellogg was a well-known, best selling editor and author.

When the Adventists moved to Takoma Park, without Kellogg, they started a new publication called Life and Health.  It too became the leading National Health Journal for a while and then, in the 1970’s, it faded at the very time when Health publishing became popular and profitable.  A name change to Vibrant Life and a makeover failed to save the misunderstood and dying Adventist Health Message.

Today, the SDA Health Magazine, with its flagship publication Vibrant Life, is virtually bankrupt, useless, and outdated.  It has been this way for decades.   The SDA’s have no functional Health Message, much less a leading physician or publication to promote it.  It is sad but true.  Instead of pretending all is well.  They need to repent and recapture their leading as leaders in Health Reform.

SDA’s Not Healthy

Without Kellogg, the Takoma Park SDA’S embraced a high fat diet that Kellogg would never support.   Thus, the members consumed large amounts of eggs, cheese, and nuts, as well as sugar, which became part of almost every meal.  This unhealthy vegetarian diet can still be seen at any Sabbath potluck, and so too the many overweight members, which only reflect the growing obesity crisis that is rampant in America.

My library is full of many old SDA cookbooks.  The recipes that come from Takoma Park are way too high in fat and thus they are very unhealthy and would have been flatly rejected by Kellogg.  What passed for Health Reform in Takoma Park did not meet the baseline nutritional formula that Kellogg correctly developed, and it is about time that the SDA’s admit that they have bungled and ruined their Health Message, and get busy making the necessary reforms.

The fact that the modern SDA’s are now trying to make some nutritional corrections in some churches is welcome, but long overdue.  Such attempts however, are half-hearted and ineffective, as evidence by the fact that so many SDA’s, including the youth, are dangerously overweight.

Moreover, I doubt anyone is standing up and admitting the truth that the SDA’s have not been following genuine Health Message all these years.  Or that they have failed to develop a vegetarian restaurant chain and have sold their once successful Health brands to Kellogg.

So you see, the SDA’s are still not facing up to the real problems, much less repenting about anything.  They do not speak the full truth or addressing the real issues.  They are still pretending that they have made no errors about anything, when the opposite is the case.  I find the SDA’s to be very dishonest and hypocritical about Health Reform as well as most everything else.

Today, no one should think that the SDA’s have a functional or credible Health Message.  That is only wishful thinking based on nostalgia.  They no longer understand the nutritional and marketing formulas that made the Battle Creek San so successful.  Until they become honest about their history, confessing their many errors, they will continue to self-destruct.

It is tragic and sad that the SDA’s have lost their way.  Why?  Because the Country is experiencing an epidemic of preventable disease that stems from a wrong diet.  If ever there was a time when the Health Message was needed by millions, it is now.   But where is the SDA Health Message?  It is in hiding.  Misunderstood and misapplied by the SDA’s.  Ruined by their incompetence and dishonesty.

At some point, I would hope the SDA’s would stop spending all their energy trying to defend themselves; pretending they have not made any errors.  They need to lose their arrogant attitude and admit that they have made many mistakes, (just like everyone else).  This is the only way to honestly address and resolve the many problems that are destroying the Advent Movement.

I hope that all SDA’s will get serious about Health Reform.  They can start by figuring out how to prepare and eat nutrient dense, high fiber foods instead of processed, high fat foods.  Anyone following the genuine Health Message will not eat cheese or any fried foods.  They will be a vegan, or very close to it.  Very few SDA’s eat this way.

Dr. McDougal, not an SDA, is an excellent example of someone that understands genuine Health Reform.  So too is Dr. Dean Ornish and some others.

Re: Health Reform?

Also, all those years, when my wife was vulnerable to wheat (she has Celiac Disease)the church was pushing their gluten products as the answer to a Vegetarian meatless diet. Meatless yes but to a Celiac, wheat can cause pre-cancerous conditions. Yet this then, and for the most part now, is ignored by the church.
