Re: Obama vs. Rumsfeld - Who's Correct?

With Cheney and now Rummy carping at Obama how does that change things?

FYI, I am against any "surge" in Afghanistan. How can we justify any attempt to aid the corrupt Karzai government and the Pakistanis who are aiding and abetting by giving shelter on their borders?

Does anyone truly believe that 30k more troops, or 18 months will make one whit of difference to the Afghanis when they have all the time in the world. Only Americans are ruled by clocks, 80% of the Afghan people are illiterate, and the "training" of local police has been poor to worst: they cannot be depended on to carry any burden. Would we here in the U.S. be so welcoming of an occupational army in our borders?
Remember the first Revolution was to send the Brits back where they came from, now we seem to believe that we are the only nation that does not care of occupying armies in our midst, but the Afghans should really like us for what we are "doing" for, or to them. Americans will not be willing to stay there indefinitely or to continue to redeploy its military for what?? When we finally leave, what will have changed?

Re: Obama vs. Rumsfeld - Who's Correct?

Well, Elaine, here is the reason for the "Compact" with Karzai. Also, notice the orginal request from U.S. military commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal. Sort of puts Obama's "brave" speech in context and if McChrystal is right, will it be a slow death for us and our troops in yet another war front?

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/afghanistan-pakistan/v- print/story/78214.html
