Bob, a lot of parents have problems with their kids. <BR> <BR>One of the church's favorite pastors has had a lot of problems with one of his kids (drug addiction) <BR> <BR>. We have two grandkids who have both done time for drug use. <BR> <BR>Almost every family has at least one person who has struggled with drugs and/or alcohol. Doesn't prevent the parents from being able to contribute to society. In most instances, it helps these parents understand the struggles of others and to have more compassion for others. <BR> <BR>renie

There are hundreds, even thousands of good respectable parents who have had children and grandchildren with problems. As Renie says, it should give them much more compassion to remember the old Indian saying: "Walk a mile in another man's moccasin before you condemn him." <BR> <BR>This is true for nearly all situatations: one that has been disturbing is about homosexuality. <BR> <BR>THe most vociferous are those who have no friends or acquaintances (of which they are aware) who are gay. There are many parents, SDA missionaries and pastors, who have gay children. Amazingly, they are the most understanding and compassionate of all. One family which I know, had a gay child and knowing the official SDA position, left the country and his family didn't know where he was for years. When he returned, to die at home, the parents spoke of the rejection he had felt all his life. <BR>How sad! Can anyone imagine a young person coming to grips with such rejection from family and the church where he had grown up? BTW, this was the grandson of HMS Richards--the original VOP speaker. It occurs in all families. Why is it that what we can't understand, we condemn?

Bob, I don't see Biden in that way. He's a wonderful family man as far as I can see, has a great smile. Hopefully, he won't run the White House as did his predecessor, Dick Cheney. <BR> <BR>He makes his share of gaffs, but no one can equal George Bush for mis-speaking. What does "compassion" mean to you? <BR> <BR>This man lost his wife and child in a terrible accident. That gives him far more understanding than those who have not suffered such losses. So, define your understanding of that word. <BR> <BR>There are probably thousands of people who have far less compassion, beginning with terrorists, some well-known dictators in Africa and other countries where life is valued little. <BR> <BR>Here in the U.S. there's Bernie Madoff--a very "compassionate" guy? The AIG group, the Wall Street bandits: none of who seem to have an ounce of compassion for what they have done to people.
