Military decorations

http://www.flags.net/FINL02.htm

What actually is the figure in the upper left corner of Finnish presidential flag?

Reminds Nazism, or WDYT?

Actually it is the basic shape of our decoration "Cross of Liberty".

More pictures of the cross can be seen at

http://www.geocities.com/finnmilpge/fmp_medals.html

The order was started in 1918. So it has nothing to do with Nazism, after all.

My father was awarded with

Medal of Liberty 2nd Class
For men and NCOs.
Awarded to many those who worked for the state during
the war and also to wounded soldiers.
URHEUDESTA = FÖR TAPPERHET = for valour
463.857 awarded and 7.713 with red cross.

I know nothing special of his valor, but wounded he surely was

Look at the hollow above his forehead

Elaine,

he was about 90 when I took the picture. Hearing aid is clearly visible, the squint too.

The strabismus divergens began when he could not see the traffic lights anymore.

Consequently he crossed the street, not being able to rely on his senses, but only on Providence.

It failed him only about two times (i.e. when he crossed a street towards 'do not walk' sign and was hit by a car).

Re: Military decorations

Below is a picture of the shell fragment a Swedish voluntary surgeon removed from my father's head.

Preoperatively - so the story goes - the doctor had asked some questions by using Swedish language.

And he had described the situation by a sentence "Yrar men svarar redligt" (delirious but answers clearly to the questions).

My father had been canvassing in Sweden one summer in 30's and had learnt the basic lingo.
