Saab 96

The car visible in the picture you see by clicking the link below is a Saab 96.

http://www.helsinkitimes.fi/htimes/index.php?optio n=com_content&view=article&id=4981:finland-through -foreign-eyes&catid=21:culture&Itemid=165

I bought one in 1974. It could accommodate us four and all our luggage, if my wife was the person doing the feat. I was never able to do the packaging by such a way that no empty space was left.

It had a curiosity, namely one could choose something called "a free clutch", which meant that one was not compelled to touch the clutch pedal when moving from a gear upwards; when changing gears downwards, one had to push the pedal.

In addition to that, the free clutch made the car go like it would if the transmission were "on neutral"; so when the car was going downhill and the driver was not revving the engine, the engine was on idle. It saved gasoline by that way.

The body was very sturdy and sheet steel was thicker than customary at the time.

Saab 96 is the only car I've joined "the roof club" with (meaning falling off the road and landing by such a way that the roof was the first part to touch the earth (in my case earth covered by snow).

The roof collapsed about 10 centimeters but no harm came to me, except catching a cold while waiting for towage. Actually the car was fit to be driven, but when windshield missing and temperature - 20 centigrade, driving the car in that weather would have been too much for me.

Re: Saab 96

It's been a favorite of those who want the safest car on the road.

Did anyone see the picture taken yesterday of a big rig that fell from the road above and landed upside down to the beach from about 15 feet below? It was so wet and sandy the first effort to upright it had to stop for fear of also falling. Fortunately, the driver was unhurt. They stated that possibly it was the brake line that was at fault.

Big Rig Drives Off Shell Beach Cliff

Posted: Jan 21, 2009 11:27 AM PST

Updated: Jan 21, 2009 06:12 PM PST

Crane Lift
Big Rig Drives Off Shell Beach Cliff

1/21/09

SHELL BEACH - A massive cleanup and repair project is underway after a big-rig truck plunged off the side of a bluff and onto the beach north of Pismo Beach.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. On Silver Shoals Drive off of Shell Beach Road.

Witnesses said it's nothing short of a miracle that no one was hurt in the crash.

Pismo Beach Police officers said the truck driver was dropping off concrete blocks at a construction site on the block.

During the delivery, the truck started moving and was soon barreling down the roadway.

It took out a fire hydrant, and rammed through a park bench, before nose-diving into the beach below.

Just a mangled mess of twisted metal and steel is left after the crash.

Wednesday afternoon a huge crane was working to try and get the truck off the beach.

Pismo Beach offices are investigating what caused the truck to roll down the hill, and plunge off the side of the bluff.

No one was inside the truck as it careened nearly 700 feet, and then another 40 feet straight down into the sand.

One witness said he came very close to being hit by the out-of-control truck.

"It was right thee it was as close to me as I want to get to a runaway truck," said Tim Hacking.

Pismo Beach Police Officer Jake Miller said "We're very lucky in this one. There were people walking on the beach, but no one got hurt. And there was no one in the park at the time, thank heaven everyone is safe."

The truck driver was trying to unhitch the fork-lift attached to the truck, when an air hose became disconnected.

Police are investigating to see if that is what caused the truck to break loose.

Investigators said the driver of the truck works for Air-Vol Block, a concrete company in San Luis Obispo.
