Going or not going nuclear?

"Nuclear energy producer Fennovoima has applied for permission to build a new nuclear power station, but environmentalists claim the company’s preparations leave room for improvement.
Fennovoima, a consortium partly owned by the German energy giant E.ON, is one of three major companies hoping to build Finland’s sixth nuclear power station. The nuclear industry is closely watching Finland, as it is the first country in western Europe to expand its nuclear power production.
Construction of the fifth reactor, Olkiluoto 3, on the west coast has drawn repeated safety concerns and consequent delays. Its owners TVO now admit the plant will come into operation only in 2012 – three years later than originally scheduled. TVO and French-German construction consortium AREVA-Siemens are currently in dispute over responsibility for the delays. "

Source and more on quality problems:

http://www.helsinkitimes.fi/htimes/index.php?optio n=com_content&view=article&id=4954:rushed-applicat ions-for-sixth-nuclear-plant&catid=33:general&Item id=201

Re: Going or not going nuclear?

France now gets approximately 75% of its power from nuclear plants.

<!-quote-!>quote:
Nuclear waste is an enormously difficult political problem which to date no country has solved. It is, in a sense, the Achilles heel of the nuclear industry. Could this issue strike down France's uniquely successful nuclear program? France's politicians and technocrats are in no doubt. If France is unable to solve this issue, says Mandil, then "I do not see how we can continue our nuclear program."
<!-/quote-!>

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/reac tion/readings/french.html

Who wants to volunteer to take France's nuclear waste? Do we have room in Nevada? Maybe we can fly it in so it doesn't have to travel by rail through St. Louis, PLEASE!!!!

Re: Going or not going nuclear?

nuclear "waste" can be reprocessed and reused in a Fast Breeder Reactor....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_breeder_reactor
as have been in current use in France for over 20 yrs.

but so far, anti-nuke protests around the world have precluded or postponed many FBR plants already built from going critical....or in the USA, from even being built.

the technology should make it possible for nuclear power to become a responsible, clean source of our future energy...if the vocal opponents can eigher be reeducated or relocated to N. Korea and left to freeze in the dark!!!

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Re: Going or not going nuclear?

And the largest source of energy in the U.S.: coal is not a pollutant? Ask the folks in the Tennessee valley.

I grew up in Birmingham, AL, where coal was used to heat and also manufacture steel at that time.
The air was so dirty it got on everything. No one dared to hang their laundry on an outside line as they only got blacker. Think what it does to the lungs!

Re: Going or not going nuclear?

I lived in Southern Illinois where they harvested "dirty" coal or coal containing sulfur. The stacks at coal burning plants can have "cleaners" put on them for dirty or clean coal to prevent the soot and CO2 problems.

We certainly have a lot more room then France to take care of the nuclear waste. Now if we can just get Obama ignited on the issue.

We will soon know whether California's emission standards are approved, which will change the auto industry.
