Interesting People I Admire and Think Make Society Better

MythBusters
Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman
Hosts of the Discovery Channel Hit Show

Bio

So. You're minding your own business, filling up your gas tank, when your cell phone rings. Hmmm. Should you answer it? Because you've heard you shouldn't use cell phones near gas stations since they can produce small sparks that can ignite big fires.

But wait. Could that actually be true?

Sounds like a job for MythBusters!

It's a tough job separating truth from urban legend, but the MythBusters are here to serve. Each week special-effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman take on three myths and use modern-day science to show you what's real and what's fiction.

That's right, they do more than explain how something may or may not be scientifically possible.

In their entertaining live performance, the MythBusters duo discuss myths, and experiences from their show and their 30+ combined years experience in the invention/technology field.

http://www.premierespeakers.com/mythbusters/bio

Anderson Cooper
Host of Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN

So you thought I would never admire someone that follows the Larry King Show. Well think again. Mr. Cooper also anchored much of CNN's live coverage of the D.C.-area sniper story and the coverage of the Space Shuttle Columbia explosion. For "America Votes 2004," he moderated a democratic presidential candidates forum the network jointly sponsored with Rock the Vote.

With a background as a war correspondent for Channel One News, Anderson Cooper was sent to Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to report on the U.S. military conflict and to Qatar where he reported on the testing of CENTCOM's new mobile headquarters. More recently, Mr. Cooper interviewed Haiti President Jean-Bertrand Aristide shortly before a 2004 revolt.

Before joining CNN, Mr. Cooper was an ABC News correspondent and host of the network's reality program, The Mole. Mr. Cooper anchored ABC's live, interactive, overnight news and interview program, World News Now as well as providing reports for World News Tonight, 20/20 and 20/20 Downtown. Re: Interesting People I Admire and Think Make Society Better

Glenn Beck

Popular host of radio and TV
New York Times bestselling author
2008 Marconi Radio Award

Yeah, I know another conservative, and Mormon too, how did he get on my list???? Read and listen to his show and find out!!!

Bio

Glenn Beck's "The Glenn Beck Program" three hour radio program is currently America's third highest-rated national talk show. As the newest member of the Fox News Channel, he recently launched his television program aptly titled "Glenn Beck".

Glenn Beck, 2008 Marconi Radio Award winner, is the host and star of the nationally syndicated radio talk show "The Glenn Beck Show". His program sets a new standard for the talk radio format. Heard on over 300 stations and syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, it is presently the third highest-rated national radio talk show among adults ages 25 to 54. The daily discussion is focused on the news of the day - politics, society and current affairs.

As the newest member of the Fox News Channel, his news format program launched in January of 2009 is one of the fastest growing TV shows in cable news. Known for his quick wit, candid opinions and engaging personality, he daily attracts millions of viewers and listeners. Beck made his television debut in May of 2006 on CNN Headline News with his self-titled topical talk show and quickly soared in popularity. Within one year, ratings in all demographics increased by double digits. He enjoyed a 65 percent increase in total viewers and an unprecedented 85 percent jump in the 25-54 demographic. In addition, he joined ABC’s Good Morning America as a regular contributor.

Beck is the author of three New York Times Bestseller List titles. His first #1, "An Inconvenient Truth", was released in November 2007. His newest book, "The Christmas Sweater" peaked at #1 on two separate occasions in the fall of 2008. He is also the founder and editor of the entertainment magazine "Fusion".

Glenn Beck made his radio debut at the age of 13 in Seattle, and grew up in nearby Mount Vernon. After graduating high school, he secured jobs as a Top 40 DJ at stations from Baltimore and Houston to Phoenix and New Haven, CT. Unfortunately, at the age of 30, Beck lost his passion for radio – and everything else – as he was consumed by alcoholism and drug addiction. It was only after he came to terms with his past and remained sober that his life found a new direction. Beck discovered new love (his second wife, Tania), religion (he was baptized Mormon), and a new vision of his career – he would pursue talk radio.

After his sobriety and life reversal, Beck received a call from an agent interested in representing him. Only days later, he received an offer to host his own talk radio show on WFLA-AM in Tampa, Florida. Despite inheriting the 18th placed position, his new program landed the #1 position in his first year. Within 18 months, Premiere Radio Networks, America's leading radio syndication company, offered Glenn a national syndication opportunity. In January 2002, "The Glenn Beck Program" debuted on 47 stations. Today, the show is heard on over 300 stations and on XM satellite Radio.

Glenn is married with four kids and resides in New York City.

Ask Neal, he has not protested the acronymn, so he knows. Anyone can look up the acronymns used online. Neal just likes to use the obscene ones, eh Neal. I assure you, Irene mine is clean as the driven snow. Check it out here:

http://www.netlingo.com/acronyms.php

It would be too easy to just give you the answer. Besides, you might come up with your own acronymn by wading through this list. Another intesting site is:

http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/chat_acronyms.ph p?S

Be careful the obscene ones can get you banned for a period of time.

Did you find the one I was using? Some people our age might not understand the contemporary, "talk to the hand". I know it was a bit new for me when I recently heard it, I had to have someone demonstrate it before I understood it.

Re: Interesting People I Admire and Think Make Society Better

From PZ's blog:

Ben Stein and I have something in common

Category: Academics • Creationism • Personal

Oh, Ben Stein, I shake my fist at you in rivalry. The infamous apologist for Republican criminality, idiotic economics, and creationist inanity got to present a commencement address to a famous university.

As it happens, I'm going to be out of town for a few days now — I'm off to deliver a commencement address myself. Yes, it's another travel day for me, I'm afraid.

Should I be jealous? Stein got to speak at Liberty University. I'm speaking at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. I might be a teensy bit ahead. After all, this is what Richard Dawkins had to say:

"Many of the questioners announced themselves as either students or faculty from Liberty, rather than from Randolph Macon which was my host institution. One by one they tried to trip me up, and one by one their failure to do so was applauded by the audience. Finally, I said that my advice to all Liberty students was to resign immediately and apply to a proper university instead. That received thunderous applause, so that I almost began to feel slightly sorry for the Liberty people. Only almost and only slightly, however."

That's a difference between Stein and myself. I'm the one speaking at a proper university.

Posted by PZ Myers at 6:32 AM

http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/05/ben_ste in_and_i_have_something.php

Bennie being interviewed for Trinity Broadcast Network:
Stein: When we just saw that man, I think it was Mr. Myers [biologist P.Z.
