Re: Famous (or INfamous!) SDA's

It used to be rather (sad) fun to see the lionization of new Adventists from the movie, rock star, or drug culture paraded around to all the camp meetings and given so much press.

One I remember was a former druggie who spent almost the entire talk time telling all the seamy stories of what he'd done, where he had been to the great imagination and interest of the young folks attending. Only at the last sentence or two did he declare his happiness at being baptized--which was by then wasted on the florid earlier comments.

Years ago it was a well-known movie star, and shen she quietly dropped Adventism, it was, of course, never mentioned. By now, the church has probably discovered that they had used bad judgment by publicizing such people.

What difference does it make that Ben Carson is an Adventist? Isn't it sufficient that he has achieved oustanding success as a surgeon and lives by his high principles? Don't all people who try to live by good principles do likewise? What is any different about Adventists? Are they somehow better? More righteous?

What difference does it make that Ben Carson is an Adventist?

Adventism is a community of faith. Like all communities, it benefits from excellent role models and effective thought-leaders. Ben Carson, thus far, is both. Our students benefit.

Carson also makes himself available beyond the community of Adventism, I think.
.

Re: Famous (or INfamous!) SDA's

Do you think good happens by chance, Elaine? I don't. If it wasn't for his mother he would have got the snake skin boots and leather pants and turned out a lot different. Yeah, I think the SDA principles help, are they right for everyone, the principles yes, the rules no. I noticed in the movie version of Ben Carson, he played a mean pool game, for some the principle and rule get mixed up there, and maybe surprised some.

Re: Famous (or INfamous!) SDA's

Look, read Obama's story, it was his grandparents that raised him for the most part, who had the most influence on his life. Why do you think he flew to Hawaii when she was near death?

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/14/us/politics/14ob ama.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all

Also, read about Sara Delano Roosevelt:

http://www.nps.gov/archive/elro/glossary/roosevelt -sara-delano.htm

He's lucky he turned out as good as he did.

Re: Famous (or INfamous!) SDA's

<!-quote-!>quote:
BEN Carson will never forget that day last June. The famed pediatric neurosurgeon was in the midst of a delicate brain operation when a nurse handed him the telephone. On the other end of the line was his doctor. What he was told would change his life forever. The Detroit native (whose single mother, with a third-grade education, raised him to become one of the greatest neurosurgeons in the world) had prostate cancer, the high-grade type that spreads aggressively and kills at a high rate. He was told that he would need to have surgery fight away.

"I had asked that I be notified as soon as they found out," says Carson, who had undergone a biopsy after noticing he was urinating more often than usual. "I just didn't want to be worried about it. I have the ability to put things out of my mind. I have always been able to do that. I can very easily isolate things."

...

Carson found out within hours of the surgery that the operation had been a success. But he also learned something that rocked him to his foundation: The cancer was only one millimeter (as close as it could get) from breaking through his prostate gland, and spreading to other parts of his body.

...<!-/quote-!>

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1077/is_3_5 8/ai_97823518

Sounds like the surgery was successful. I had heard something about his health too, but had not heard the results. Bob Shields, your asking caused me to go looking.

Thanks Bob. I have wondered for a long time. He is such a talented man who has done wonders for mankind and the medical world. I pray that he has many years ahead of him. Bob
