The Joyful Expressions In Dance

Having visited a messianic community I was impressed by their making their Sabbath a joyous occasion and their expression of it in dance and joyful communion with each other. They looked forward to their Sabbath and it was quite evident to me that they didn't want it to end as they continued playing their instruments even after the Sabbath hours ended. I wondered why it was lost and also thought of the wonderful atmosphere and influence it would present to our children and to visitors as it related to our connection to heaven.

I went googling and found this:

"To worship God in dance is biblical. The Bible commends it (Psalm 149:3; 150:4). Scripture gives many references to the use of dance as a form of joyous celebration and of reverent worship.

In the Hebrew tradition, dance functioned as a medium of prayer and praise, as an expression of joy and reverence, and as a mediator between God and humanity (Taylor 1976:81). This understanding of dance permeated the faith of the early Christian church. During the Middle Ages despite increasing proscriptions against the use of dance, it continued to be utilised as a medium of prayer and praise. However, by the time of the Reformation the church, both Catholic and Protestant, had eliminated dance from worship". http://www.davidicdance.com/dance_in_the_church.ht m

And more on the Biblical relevance and Hebrew meanings, here:
http://www.davidicdance.com/dance_from_the_scriptu res.htm

DANCE from the SCRIPTURES

"In the Hebrew Scriptures a number of words are translated into edancef. In Ecclesiastes 3:4 it states: ea time to mourn and a time to dancef. The word raw-kadŒ (7540) means to leap or skip about. The word kaw-rarŒ (3769), which literally means whirling, was used to describe King Davidfs dance as the Ark was being brought to Jerusalem". II Samuel 6:14

Cadge

Christians need to get out an dance more.

SDAs probably are going to look more like dancing boards than even these people:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtVlpKnf0ls

Reminds me of the James Joyce line, "Mr. Duffy lived a short distance from his body...."

Hey, I look like a culturally deprived dancing board too.

How can you worship God freely and joyfully with a stiff and rigid body that can't express exultation?

Beats me....

You make tears come from my eyes----Stop It!!

Hey, ya know, I wasn't too thorough on my dancing expose there was I maggs, being that I didn't include a video. Thanks for picking up my slack. I remember a nun I had in primary grades saying during art class one day, "use your imaginations" on a project she gave us, and I got scared because I didn't think I had one.

Cadge

...I got scared because I didn't think I had one.

If you'd been in SDA school you'd be afraid 'cause the devil was prob'ly in charge of your imagination. Secret vice and all....

Seriously, most Christians dance like they've been hunched over computers and books all their lives, and the missionary position is probably a challenge for them.

Re: The Joyful Expressions In Dance

remember the story of poor Uzzah, killed by God for helping steady the ark over a rough spot in the cartpath?

take your pick which story to believe:
2 Samuel 6:6
And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God smote him.

or maybe this is the story to believe:
1 Chronicles 13:9
And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Childon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzza, and He smote him.

well, afterward, King David, to celebrate the return of the ark, gets down and dances...
apparently nekkid!!! in front of some impressionable women... Sauls daughter is one of them, and she tries to copy the king...and is punished by God who makes her barren... having no kids... for dancing, and "uncovering" herself ... unless you believe another text which says she does have kids. http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/2sam/6.html#6

anyway, dancing is a suggestive vertical expression of a sinful, horizontal, bad idea... and when you "get down", you go down....

it says so in these texts:
http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/interp/dancing.html

and God or somebody or something appears to be punishing Patrick for all that dirty dancing

whoops....wait a minute.... these other texts say dancing is OK....

http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/interp/dancing.html

alright,

nevermind

carry on

Conservative Adventism has emerged again, even more forcefully.

Check out the latest Review online for Angel Rodriquez' views on jewely and eating out on the Sabbath. Good way to reduce the SDA membership quickly--make being happy a sin and we're all guilty!

"remember the story of poor Uzzah, killed by God for helping steady the ark over a rough spot in the cartpath"?

"And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Childon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzza, and He smote him".

He wasn't supposed to touch the Holy box. It was only to be touched by certain people and only through the rings by staves on the sides. It was about obediance. No antinomianism back then allowed either. David danced naked before the ark, even while wearing only the upper garment, but he didn't touch the Ark. God made an example of Uzzah. It's about obediance. Who knows if he will not be amongst the saved? It may have caused the first death, but not the second for him.

Anyhow, don't worry about the imperfect "campfire stories". They were told by imperfect men that undoubtedly were exagerated or morphed into grander exposes than from their original interprations. The Holy Spirit will still bring you the Gospel message through it all.

So, calm down and enjoy the music and dance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub4cueDMPPs&NR=1

BTW John, I really appreciate the teachings you have shared on the old earth. You've made me a believer. But I think you're pretty brave to do a five atmosphre splash aftr only a shallow water checkout dive experience. Glad nothing went wrong. Must be that your capable of gasping the science and cautions of it all with good clarity on short notice.

Cadge

If there ever was a piece of non-functional jewelry it is a man's necktie. It serves no purpose except as decoration and can cost quite a lot. And most men don't even like wearing one.

But it is never mentioned because it's a man's jewelry, not a woman's.

renie

Re: The Joyful Expressions In Dance

Yes, Renie. Most neckties are far more expensive than the cheap costume jewelry most of us wear--like a scarf as a color to tie our outfits together. How dare men tell women how to dress!! Worse yet, too many women listen and obey.
